Carol Bruce has been well known on the southern Ontario folk circuit
for several years. She has a unique sound that blends open guitar tunings
(a la Joni Mitchell) with the rich, warm vocal stylings of a traditionalist.
She has been acclaimed for mingling haunting melodies with insightful lyrics
about the complexities of the human condition - relationships, the passing
of time, our everyday battles with urban life. Among her many musical accolades,
Carol won the 1993 CKVR "Up and Coming" competition, which resulted
her high-rotation video for the song "Please Come Home."
When I Grow Up is Carol Bruce's long-awaited debut album, a collection of thirteen of her finest songs. Co-produced by Carol and Robert Wright (Chris Lakerdas, Kevin Duke, Daniel Huezo) and featuring performances by some of Toronto's finest musicians, this album has a timeless, austere quality. Simply arranged and tracked live-off-the-floor for the most part, this record captures the energy and intimacy of Carol's live performances. Highlights include the ethereal "The Flame and the Fire," the haunting and beautiful "When I Grow Up," and the lead-off single "Summer Plane." From the quirky "Cellular Phone" to the soaring "Summer Plane," Carol brings her charm and wit to bear on the most ordinary of subjects. Though many years in the writing and many months in production, When I Grow Up has been well worth the wait!
