Brent is the quintessential
not-celtic maritime artist - though you will find some lovely violin work
at the live shows, and on his upcoming 3rd release - STONY PLAIN.
Since 1992 Brent has made his home in Saint
John, New Brunswick (a division of the IRVING group) and played literally
hundreds of club and festival gigs both within the region and as far away
as British Columbia, where he showcased at MUSIC WEST'96. Though hard to
label, with a variety of influences that bring to mind Bob Dylan, John
Prine, the Grateful Dead and the Waterboys, Brent and his band (loosely,
and we mean loosely, known as the Jartrip) have developed a reputation
as musicians who strive for the unconventional and the MOMENT, never play
the same show twice, and refuse to learn the words to Barrett's Privateers.
Brent has shared the stage with a literal who's who of Canadian folk music,
from Valdy, Murray Mclaughlin and Garnet Rogers, to Blue Rodeo, the Barenaked
Ladies, and Susan Aglukark. In the process fame has eluded him greatly
outside of New Brunswick, but that all may change with Brent's recent indications
that he in fact DOES have a price.
What he's been up to:
Aside from changing diapers on his boy
Isaac and as a subsequent result of that daily task realizing he is not
in fact the centre of the universe, 1997 saw Brent Mason perform a mainstage
showcase at the East Coast Music Awards (which, while enthusiastically
received did absolutely nothing for his career). He had two songs included
in a BBC documentary soundtrack, finished recording his 3rd (count `em,
three!) album, STONY PLAIN, and raged against the machine through all of
it.
