BENJI (the band) is the marriage of all
three distinct musical styles. Their styles range from folk/country rock
to soul to swing. Their songs are infectious, original and performed with
youthful excitement. They incorporate full-sounding harmonies and a variety
of instrumentation into their music, producing an altogether refreshing
and satisfying aural experience.
Wherever a rhythm section is appropriate
they turn to either Mike Ostler (bass) and Pat Mooney (drums) from Guelph,
or Ralph Dame (bass) and Brian Hodgson (drums) from London.
John Charlton (Guelph, Ontario) performed
for many years in London (Planet People, Sci-Phonics) before being drawn
into Guelph's vibrant music scene. While he is well known for his ability
to move fluently from drums to guitar to keyboard, he also possesses a
strong, soulful singing voice and a talent for writing quality songs.
Steve Woeller (Hamilton, Ontatio) co-founded
Guelph's Big Smoke in the early 1980's and penned many of their trademark
songs. His music is clever and catchy and his voice has a warm, baritone-like
quality. Although he primarily plays guitar, he has recently developed
into a formidable harmonica player.
Tannis Slimmon (Guelph, Ontario) played
extensively for many years in Guelph's Bird Sisters and later on in Crows
Feet. She is an accomplished guitar and mandolin player and she possesses
a wonderfully smooth and rich voice. Her genuine love for vocal harmony
is witnessed by all who have had the pleasure of seeing her perform.
